Booker T. Washington?s blazing speed blindsides defeated Carol City

The calendar says it?s September, but track season doesn?t seem to be over at Booker T. Washington.

The lightning-fast Tornadoes ? who put on a speed display all spring and summer on the way to 7-on-7 championships ? opened the regular season Friday night at Traz Powell Stadium on yet another gear, blowing past Carol City 42-13.

Quarterback Treon Harris ran for two touchdowns and threw for three more as Booker T., ranked 10th nationally in the USA Today poll, rolled up 432 yards of total offense and forced a running clock in the fourth quarter.

Carol City trailed only 12-7 midway through the second quarter when Harris was stripped on his way to the end zone. The Chiefs? Tyree Johnson recovered the fumble at the 11-yard line. But Carol City couldn?t move the chains and after a 13-yard punt gave BTW possession at the Chiefs? 32-yard line, the track meet ensued.

?We weren?t happy with the way the offense played last week against Northwestern even though we won [32-6],? said Harris, who finished 10 of 16 for 184 yards through the air and ran the ball nine times for 43 yards. ?Coaches always say don?t let turnovers get you down. After I fumbled and we got the ball back, we just went back to work.?

Booker T. reeled off 30 points in a span of 14 minutes. The Tornadoes defense, playing without two starters including star linebacker Matthew Thomas (strep throat), sacked Carol City quarterback Akeem Jones four times and forced three turnovers. Jones finished 19 of 29 for 224 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

The Tornadoes will make their Sun Life Stadium debut next week when they take on Miami Central. Booker T. figures to be the highest-ranked team in the nation from South Florida after the Rockets were crushed by Grayson (Ga.).

?We just got to make sure we?re ready to go in there and play with the lights on,? Booker T. coach Tim ?Ice? Harris said. ?Even if Central had won [Friday?s game at Grayson] or whatever, we know the rivalry between us is big and that it?s going to be a big game. We know they?re going to be fired up to prove they?re really a nationally ranked team.?

Belle Glade Glades Day 28, Monsignor Pace 23: Down 28-10 at halftime and with treadmarks on their backs from talented running back Kelvin Taylor?s 239 yards and three touchdowns, host Monsignor Pace appeared hopeless. A new study by Harvard researchers may provide another reason to skip the canned pumpkin and cranberry sauce this Thanksgiving. People who ate one serving of canned food daily over the course of five days, the study found, had significantly elevated levels ? more than a tenfold increase ? of bisphenol-A, or BPA, a substance that lines most food and drink cans.

Most of the research on BPA, a so-called endocrine disruptor that can mimic the body?s hormones,?has focused on its use in plastic bottles. It has been linked in some studies to a higher risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity, and health officials in the United States have come under increasing pressure to regulate it. Some researchers, though, counter that its reputation as a health threat to people is exaggerated.

The new study, which was published Tuesday in The Journal of the American Medical Association, is the first to measure the amounts that are ingested when people eat food that comes directly out of a can, in this case soup. The spike in BPA levels that the researchers recorded is one of the highest seen in any study.

?We cannot say from our research what the consequences are,? said Karin Michels, an associate professor of epidemiology at Harvard Medical School and an author of the study. ?But the very high levels that we found are very surprising. We would have never expected a thousand-percent increase in their levels of BPA.?

As part of the study, Dr. Michels and her colleagues recruited a group of 75 staff members and students at the Harvard School of Public Health, split them into two groups, and then followed them for two weeks. During the first week, one group ate a 12-ounce serving of vegetarian soup from a common brand of canned soup every day for five days; the other group, meanwhile, ate 12 ounces of vegetarian soup made from fresh ingredients each day. Then, after a two-day soup-free ?wash out? period, the groups switched roles and were followed for five more days. At the end of each five-day period, the subjects provided urine samples.

That's a serious question, and it adds poignancy to the tragicomic spectacle of the frankly ridiculous gathering in Tampa. The one indisputable truth we heard from speaker after speaker at the Republican National Convention is that this is a consequential election. The country faces huge challenges and fundamental choices, and the two major parties have very different ideas about the way forward.

Anyone familiar with this column knows that I prefer the progressive vision over the conservative one. But I believe it's not possible for the nation to set a course without a vigorous, honest debate ? and I know there can be no such contest of ideas without agreement on factual truth.

Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan's speech Wednesday night was a demonstration that he and presidential nominee Mitt Romney have no apparent respect for the truth. Romney's pollster, Neil Newhouse, boasted this week that "we're not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers." I'll say.
????
Ryan built his career on a reputation for wonkish immersion in the details and willingness to tell uncomfortable truths. But in his address to the convention he lied and dissembled so shamelessly that I thought I detected a whiff of desperation in the air. Or maybe it was just ambition.
????
The whopper with which those pesky fact-checkers are having a field day is Ryan's attempt to blame President Obama for the shutdown of a huge General Motors plant in Ryan's hometown of Janesville, Wis. Ryan's point of reference was a visit Obama made to the plant during the 2008 campaign.
????
"A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant," Ryan said. "Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: 'I believe that if our government is there to support you ... this plant will be here for another hundred years.' That's what he said in 2008. Well, as it turned out, that plant didn't last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that's how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight."

In other words, Obama promised to help those workers by keeping the plant open but failed to deliver. This is a bald-faced lie.

As Glenn Kessler, author of The Washington Post's Fact-Checker column, has noted, Obama visited the Janesville plant in February of 2008. GM announced the plant's shutdown in June 2008 ? five months before Obama was elected and seven months before he took office. Ryan should be blaming George W. Bush, not Barack Obama.
????
And technically, the plant isn't even closed. It's on "standby," according to GM, and can be reactivated if the demand for production rises sufficiently.

Ryan was careful with his words. He didn't specify who was president when the plant was ordered to cease production. He described it as "locked up and empty," rather than "closed." But by any reasonable standard, Ryan was being deceptive. He wanted his listeners to believe something that simply is not true.
????
Another supremely dishonest moment was Ryan's criticism of how Obama dealt with the Simpson-Bowles debt panel: "He created a bipartisan debt commission. They came back with an urgent report. He thanked them, sent them on their way, and then did exactly nothing."
????
Lordy. Ryan failed to mention that he was a member of the Simpson-Bowles commission. He also failed to mention that he was part of a minority of panel members who flatly rejected the "urgent report" he now blasts Obama for ignoring. That report, you see, endorsed a balanced approach including not only budget cuts but also revenue increases. Can't have that.

To be sure, these are not the worst of the Republican lies. For me, the ultimate dishonor goes to the untrue charge that Obama has eliminated the work requirement for welfare recipients ? a lie designed not only to deceive but to stoke racial resentment among working-class voters. There are also the cynical and misleading claims about Medicare savings under the Affordable Care Act. And Obama's "You didn't build that" line, taken out of context, has provided the convention's main theme, a mantra recited by virtually every speaker.

It's hardly unusual for politicians to highlight convenient facts and ignore inconvenient ones. But I honestly can't recall a campaign so firmly grounded in untruth. Anyone who hoped Ryan might elevate the debate should be bitterly disappointed.

Google-Apple chiefs hold secret patent talks

Sources claim CEOs are in talks to resolve recent patent disputes.

The top brass at Apple and Google have been conducting behind-the-scenes talks about a range of intellectual property matters, including the mobile patent disputes between the companies, sources have claimed.

Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google chief Larry Page are understood to have had a phone conversation last week, insiders claim

Page and Cook are expected to talk again in the coming weeks, though no firm date has been set, the sources added.

One source told Reuters that a meeting had been scheduled for this Friday, but had been delayed for reasons that were unclear.

The two companies are keeping lines of communication open at a high level against the backdrop of Apple's legal victory in a patent infringement case against Samsung, which uses Google's Android software.

Last Friday, a jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages and set the stage for a possible ban on sales of some Samsung products in a case that has been widely viewed as a "proxy war" between Apple and Google.

One possible scenario under consideration could be a truce involving disputes over basic features and functions in Google's Android mobile software, one source said.

But it was unclear whether Page and Cook were discussing a broad settlement of the various disputes between the two companies, most of which involve the burgeoning mobile computing area, or are focused on a more limited set of issues.

Competition between Google and Apple has heated up in recent years with the shift from PCs to mobile devices. Google's Android software has become the world's No.1 smartphone operating system.

The popularity of the software has been in tandem with patent infringement lawsuits involving various hardware vendors who use it, including Samsung and HTC.

The latest complaint was filed by Motorola Mobility, now a unit of Google, against Apple at the US International Trade Commission claiming some features of Apple's devices infringe on its patents.

A previous lawsuit between the two in a Chicago court was thrown out by a federal judge, who said neither side could prove damages.

Apple in recent months has moved to lessen its reliance on Google's products. Apple recently unveiled its own mobile mapping software, replacing the Google product used in the iPhone, and said it would no longer offer Google's YouTube as a pre-loaded app in future versions of its iPhone.

Cook took the helm at Apple a year ago, and Page stepped into the top job at Google a few months before that.

The conversation between Page and Cook last week did not result in any formal agreement, but the two executives agreed to continue talking, according to one source.

Google's Larry Page, who sat out several public speaking engagements earlier this summer because of an unspecified medical condition affecting his voice, has continued to run Google's business.

Apple and Google declined to comment on any discussions.
