If all of this sounds familiar, that?s because this is the premise of 2009?s Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor for DS (and last year?s slightly tweaked 3DS remake, Overclocked). It is also, to a word, the premise of Devil Survivor 2. You?d be forgiven for writing off DS2 as a copy-and-paste rehash of its predecessor, because the similarities between the two games? opening are downright uncanny. It?s not until you?ve invested a couple of hours into the game that it begins to spiral away from what?s come before and take on its own shape and identity.

Hide Folder Ext
In Poe's story The Purloined Letter, a thief confounds the Paris police who are seeking a stolen letter; detective C. Auguste Dupin finds it hidden in plain sight. FS Pro's Hide Folder Ext ($29.95 direct) takes this concept to the next level. The files it hides aren't in plain sight; they're not visible at all. A few clues might reveal that something is hidden, but simple precautions make discovery unlikely.
Hide Folder Ext is specifically designed to hide files on removable drives. You can use it on USB flash drives, memory cards, or other similar devices. The product does warn against using it on memory belonging to other devices such as smartphones and tablets. Note, too, that it doesn't encrypt files; it just hides them.
Hide and Unhide
To hide files on a removable device you simply launch the program, select the device, and define a password. This creates a folder named My Hidden Folder, which you can open right away within the program. When not hidden it acts like any other folder. You can drag or copy/paste files and folders into or out of the hidden folder, edit the files it contains, or create new files. When finished, you simply click Hide & Quit. Clicking Quit instead leaves the folder visible, so be careful which you choose.
You can create hidden folders on as many devices as you like. When you select a device that contains a hidden folder, Hide Folder Ext will ask for the password unhide the folder. If the device has been prepped with a My Hidden Folder that's currently not hidden, it will prompt for a password (either the same password or a new one) to hide the folder.
Hidden, But Not Undetectable
Let's suppose detective C. Auguste Dupin, searching for a file containing sensitive personal information about a client, has obtained a removable drive as evidence. He views it in Windows Explorer and finds that the drive is empty. Or is it? On opening the properties window for the drive he finds half of its capacity is in use. An empty drive that's half full?there's a conundrum!
Dupin now launches the command-line utility CHKDSK, with surprising results. This "empty" drive contains a hidden file and dozens of other files. Windows is fooled; CHKDSK isn't. Worse, CHKDSK's /V switch lists all files and folders on the drive, including the supposedly hidden ones.
At this point Dupin, convinced that the drive does indeed contain the sought-after data, launches a sector editor. This tool lets him view all data stored on the drive without any regard for files, folders, or other organizational techniques. By searching on terms related to the sensitive data, he locates and reassembles the sectors comprising the file. Mystery solved!

Rare Earth element found far, far away

Nearly 13.7 billion years ago, the universe was made of only hydrogen, helium and traces of lithium ? byproducts of the Big Bang. Some 300 million years later, the very first stars emerged, creating additional chemical elements throughout the universe. Since then, giant stellar explosions, or supernovas, have given rise to carbon, oxygen, iron and the rest of the 94 naturally occurring elements of the periodic table.
Today, stars and planetary bodies bear traces of these elements, having formed from the gas enriched by these supernovas over time. For the past 50 years, scientists have been analyzing stars of various ages, looking to chart the evolution of chemical elements in the universe and to identify the astrophysical phenomena that created them.
Now a team of researchers from institutions including MIT has detected the element tellurium for the first time in three ancient stars. The researchers found traces of this brittle, semiconducting element ? which is very rare on Earth ? in stars that are nearly 12 billion years old. The finding supports the theory that tellurium, along with even heavier elements in the periodic table, likely originated from a very rare type of supernova during a rapid process of nuclear fusion. The researchers published their findings online in Astrophysical Journal Letters.
"We want to understand the evolution of tellurium ? and by extension any other element ? from the Big Bang to today," says Anna Frebel, an assistant professor of astrophysics at MIT and a co-author on the paper. "Here on Earth, everything's made from carbon and various other elements, and we want to understand how tellurium on Earth came about."
'In the halo of the Milky Way,' a rare element found
The team analyzed the chemical composition of three bright stars located a few thousand light-years away, "in the halo of the Milky Way," Frebel says. The researchers looked at data obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope's spectrograph, an instrument that splits light from a star into a spectrum of wavelengths. If an element is present in a star, the atoms of that element absorb starlight at specific wavelengths; scientists can observe this absorption as dips in the spectrograph's data.
Frebel and her colleagues detected dips in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum ? at a wavelength that matched tellurium's natural light absorption ? providing evidence that the rare Earth element does indeed exist in space, and was likely created more than 12 billion years ago, at the time when all three stars formed.
The researchers also compared the abundance of tellurium to that of other heavy elements such as barium and strontium, finding that the ratio of elements was the same in all three stars. Frebel says the matching ratios support a theory of chemical-element synthesis: namely, that a rare type of supernova may have created the heavier elements in the bottom half of the periodic table, including tellurium.
No ordinary supernova
According to theoretical predictions, elements heavier than iron may have formed as part of the collapsing core of a supernova, when atomic nuclei collided with huge amounts of neutrons in a nuclear fusion process. For 50 years, astronomers and nuclear physicists have modeled this rapid process, named the r-process, in order to unravel the cosmic history of the elements.
Frebel's team found that the ratios of heavy elements observed in the three stars matched the ratios predicted by these theoretical models. The findings, she says, confirm the theory that heavier elements likely formed from a rare, extremely rapid supernova.
"You can make iron and nickel in any ordinary supernova, anywhere in the universe," Frebel says. "But these heavy elements seem to only be made in specialized supernovas. Adding more elements to the observed elemental patterns will help us understand the astrophysical and environmental conditions needed for this process to operate."
Frebel is continuing the search for heavy elements in space. For example, selenium ? which is similar to tellurium ? has yet to be detected in the universe. Tin, Frebel says, is also a difficult element to spot, as are many elements along the same row as tellurium in the periodic table.
"There are still quite a few holes," Frebel says. "Every now and then, we can add an element, and it adds another data point that makes our work easier."

Contrary to Earth, our Moon has no active volcanoes, and the traces of its past volcanic activity date from billions of years ago. This is surprising, because recent Moonquake data suggest that there is plenty of liquid magma deep within the Moon because part of the rocks residing there are thought to be molten. Scientists have now identified a likely reason for this peaceful surface life: the hot, molten rock in the Moon's deep interior could be so dense that it is simply too heavy to rise to the surface like a bubble in water. For their experiments, the scientists produced microscopic copies of moon rock collected by the Apollo missions and melted them at the extremely high pressures and temperatures found inside the Moon. They then measured their densities with powerful X-rays. The results are published in the Journal Nature Geosciences on 19 February 2012.
The team was led by Mirjam van Kan Parker and Wim van Westrenen from VU University Amsterdam and comprised scientists from the Universities of Paris 6/CNRS, Lyon 1/CNRS, Edinburgh, and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble.
Five decades after the Apollo missions, the formation and geological history of the Moon still hold many secrets. The astronauts not only returned 380 kg of Moon rocks to Earth but also placed many scientific instruments on the lunar surface. Last year, NASA scientists published a new model for the make-up of the interior of the Moon, using Moonquake data from these Apollo-era seismometers. Renee Weber and her colleagues claim that the deepest parts of the lunar mantle, bordering on the small metallic core, are partially molten, by up to 30 per cent. In the Earth, such bodies of magma tend to move towards the surface leading to volcanic eruptions. To determine the density of lunar magma, Wim van Westrenen and his colleagues synthesised moon rock in their laboratory in Amsterdam, using the composition derived from Apollo samples as their "recipe". The pressures and temperatures close to the core of the Moon are more than 45,000 bar and about 1500 degrees. It is possible to generate these extreme conditions with small samples, heating them with a high electric current while squashing them in a press. By measuring the attenuation of a powerful synchrotron X-ray beam at the ESRF traversing the sample both solid and molten, the density at high pressure and high temperature could be measured. "We had to use the most brilliant X-ray beam in the world for this experiment because the magma sample is so tiny and confined in a massive, highly absorbing container. Without a bright beam of X-rays, you cannot measure these density variations", says Mohamed Mezouar from the ESRF.
The measurements at the ESRF were combined with computer simulations to calculate the magma density at any location in the Moon.
Nearly all the lunar magmas were found to be less dense than their solid surroundings, similar to the situation on Earth. There is one important exception: small droplets of titanium-rich glass first found in Apollo 14 mission samples produce liquid magma as dense as the rocks found in the deepest parts of the lunar mantle today. This magma would not move towards the surface.
Such titanium-rich magma can only be formed by melting titanium rich solid rocks. Previous experiments have shown that such rocks were formed soon after the formation of the Moon at shallow levels, close to the surface. How did they get deep into the mantle? The scientists conclude that large vertical movements must have occurred early in the history of the Moon, during which titanium-rich rocks descended from near the surface all the way to the core-mantle boundary. "After descending, magma formed from these near-surface rocks, very rich in titanium, and accumulated at the bottom of the mantle ? a bit like an upside-down volcano. Today, the Moon is still cooling down, as are the melts in its interior. In the distant future, the cooler and therefore solidifying melt will change in composition, likely making it less dense than its surroundings. This lighter magma could make its way again up to the surface forming an active volcano on the Moon ? what a sight that would be! ? but for the time being, this is just a hypothesis to stimulate more experiments", concludes Wim van Westrenen.

Bridgette, the beloved, ever-smiling, devastatingly disabled daughter of Tom and Marijane Famulari, passed away early this morning.
Aging, caregiving parents must learn to care for themselves
These remarkable parents, full of more love and faith and generosity than most of us can even imagine, were prepared for this mournful moment nearly 30 years ago. Back then, they were midlife parents of teenagers who agreed to take in a deathly ill, ?medically fragile' girl as a foster child.
I shared their story on the front page of The Washington Post, in 1988, when I was a twenty-something summer intern. Here is what I wrote back then:
The Joys of Fostering a Special Child; Disabled Girl Teaches Md. Family Unconditional Love
"Tom and Maryjane Famulari already have made plans for their 2 1/2-year-old foster daughter's funeral: The service will be the Mass of the Angels, her dress will be lavender with a white pinafore, and they will play her favorite song, "Hosanna."
Their daughter Bridgette is a 28-pound child who was born three months prematurely. She is profoundly retarded, has cerebral palsy and breathes through a transparent tube that runs from a hole at the base of her throat to a steel oxygen tank near her crib. She has been hospitalized more than 80 times.
Despite her long list of medical problems, the Famularis agreed at Bridgette's birth to become her foster parents. "She gives so much more than we can give to her," said Tom Famulari, 40, a high school biology teacher in Baltimore.
"Everybody needs love and to die in dignity," said homemaker Maryjane Famulari, 40, coaxing a pout from her daughter that quickly slid into a contagious smile. "She knows what it is to be loved. She can't hold her head up, but she has a joy about her that I can't explain."
Doctors told them she would die soon. They planned her funeral and fought like warriors to keep her alive with the sheer force of their will, love, faith and extraordinarily difficult 24/7 care their daughter required. And their 'foster' daughter quickly became simply their daughter - by love and law.
Thirty years later they found me again, said I wouldn't believe their journey.

A sculpture of former Spanish dictator Francisco Franco set inside a fridge was drawing mixed reviews at a contemporary art fair, which opened Wednesday in Madrid.
The work is by Spanish artist Eugenio Merino, who depicts the general wearing a green uniform and sunglasses with his knees bent inside the fridge, according to a report by AFP. ?The fridge is decorated to resemble a Coca-Cola logo.
Merino said the sculpture ?Always Franco? was designed to symbolize how persistence of the general as a topic of conversation in Spain, despite his death in 1975. He ruled Spain from 1939.
