Green real estate is on the rise across the country and there are many benefits associated with it.? Green homes keep the cost of the utilities down for the homeowner while at the same time help out the environment.
As a homeowner
As a homeowner you can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars yearly in your utility bills when you purchase a home that is green.? There are homes available that are totally off the grid, homes that are partially off the grid and some that call themselves green but have only had minor renovations.? Of course, houses that are completely green and away from the grid are going to cost a lot more. Are they worth it? Yes.? The savings in the years to come make these homes a very viable real estate opportunity.
If standards were raised for building and green houses were no longer a luxury but a necessity, there would be approximately 70% less waste in building materials. This is a substantial amount of waste to consider.
More and more homes across the country are being built using recycled materials, but building companies need to go a lot further to reach the 70% value. Even furniture manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon and you can purchase sofas, bunk beds, and almost any other type of wooden furniture made from recycled wood. Some bunk beds and tables are now being manufactured using only wood from sustainable forests.? This too is a step forward when it comes to greening up our homes.
Looking at the environment
Everybody needs to take a second look at environmentally friendly products including homes. Research has shown that global warming could decrease as much as 10% if all of the buildings in the United States were built according to standards for green construction.
The environment needs your help and you can play your part when you are house-hunting. When visiting open houses, ask what the green features are in it. This way, you?ll be spreading the word that green homes are wanted and needed by homebuyers.
If you?re in the market for a new home look for one that is green to the extent that you can afford it. If you can only purchase a home that has had minor renovations made to it to make it green, do so. At least you are doing your part to help save the planet.
