Raise a Green Dog!: It's National Holistic Pet Day, a great day to ...

Today is National Holistic Pet Day!

To commemorate this important day in the health and happiness of your dog (and other pets), we wanted to share a few ideas to help your dog have a more holistic life!

But first...what exactly is holistic? And what does it mean?

Many define holistic as a means of caring for and treating the whole being, while emphasizing the importance of the whole and the interdependence of its parts, rather than the separation and analysis of its parts.

What that means to us and our lives is that Mum strives to create an environment, where every part of our lives as dogs - from playing, sleeping, resting, eating, drinking, care and everyday living - works together for our health and happiness.

That means that everything we do, touch, smell, eat, drink and come in contact with is as healthy as possible; taking?preventative means to help us live a healthier, happier life through healthy eating and healthy living for the body; and creating a fun, happy, entertaining and engaging life for the mind.

Here are some tips that you can utilize to help your dog live a more holistic life:

Eating

One wise person once said, 'good food is wise medicine.' They are right! Just like for you, dogs need a plan of healthy eating, and it's one of the most important holistic paths you can practice with your dog. Learn more about healthier eating for your dog, and the variety of healthy eating choices available to help you determine what's right for your lifestyle and your dog.

Drinking

Water is the basis of your dog's life. Did you know that a dog can loose all of its fat and half of its protein and survive, but only a 10% loss of body water causes serious illness? But not all water is created equal. There are dangers lurking in much of the water that dog's are exposed to - from flouride in tap water, to giardia in puddles and streams, to chemicals from farm run off and more. Learn how to keep your dog's water safer and healthier.

Play and exercise

An active mind is a healthy mind, and creates a healthier body. That goes for dogs too! Good exercise, combined with stimulating play time can help your dog be happier and healtier! Some new (and old) ideas to help provide a higher quality of life for your dog include taking a long walk or?hike, creating great boredom busters for rainy, hot or too cold days, and learning new tricks, just to name a few! And select your dog's toys and gear with care,?checking to be sure they are free of toxins and other unhealthy matter.

Outside Environment

If you're a dog, you love the great outdoors! Help your dog by making sure your dog's outside environment is safe and healthy; and free from unwanted chemicals and toxins. Learn how you can make your lawn and yard more organic and free from harmful chemicals. And while you're out and about in the world, take special precautions to avoid highly chemically treated ?green areas, contaminated ponds and streams, and more.

Inside Environment

Our homes are where are dogs spend most of their time. Now's the time to take even more steps to make sure it's a healthy environment. Try these great green cleaning tips and recipes?for floors, toilets, carpeting, and more. And next time you are thinking of new flooring check out what we recommend for the most eco-friendly and healthy flooring?for your dog.

Healthcare

Preventative health care is another one of the most important things you can do for your green dog. Everything from a good annual checkups with blood work, to titers for checking?vaccine?immunity (instead of loading up on?vaccines?every year), to good weight management and looking at alternative healthcare options for your dog, like chiropractic,?acupuncture, massage and more. And when something just isn't right and you need to seek out professional veterinary advice, look for and support your local holistic veterinarian for help and advice for whatever your dog needs.

Remember, part of being holistic is having a positive and loving outlook on life; so get out there and celebrate this special day with your dog, you'll not only make their life more positive, but they'll return the favor in spades! Take a nice hike, a fun walk around the park, teach them a trick or two, or play a fun game together; and remember to always have fun with your best friend!

You can learn more about how to help your dog be greener and healthier in the Learn To Be Green section of our website, as well as sniff out pawsome healthy and green products from our Raise A Green Dog Partners (please support them, they help keep us bringing you the good green stuff!)

And don't furget to connect with us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up on updates, discussions, info, fun and more; to help your dog be the healthiest he or she can be!

County's Challenger youth camp overcomes troubled past but faces ...

Tucked behind a state prison in the dusty high desert of Lancaster, the Challenger Memorial Youth Center is Los Angeles County?s largest probation facility. Each of its six camps is named after an astronaut who died in the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster; the school, Christa McAuliffe High, takes its name from the teacher who was onboard.

The sprawling grounds are austere, with squat buildings and few trees to block the harsh sunlight. Probation officers sit by brightly colored doors listening to the rumble of classes in session. Some students are hunched down behind flat-screen computers zipping through English courses; others work with high-tech building gear in goggles, while another group reads aloud about food safety, animatedly responding to questions from their teacher.

To truly appreciate this picture, you need to know what Challenger was like before ? even just a year ago, when L.A. County officials settled a major class-action federal lawsuit that had made the camp's name synonymous with failure.

That failure, at one of the nation?s largest complexes for housing and educating juvenile offenders, was summed up in a class action lawsuit. The suit detailed allegations of officials systematically denying young people their fundamental right to an education by graduating a student who could not read his own diploma, locking students in solitary confinement (sometimes for months) and haphazardly kicking students out of class.

But a 2011 settlement agreement gave county officials a legal mandate to change. The agreement requires monitoring and quarterly reports by a team of experts over four years who check on 13 areas of reform, including literacy, instruction and special education. A monitor is at the site several times a month, sometimes weekly.

?There?s a lot of pressure on everybody,? said school principal Marsha Watkins. ?We live in a fishbowl pretty much. But the real bottom line is it comes down to kids. ...We weren?t doing what we needed to do for kids, and now we are.?

Yet even as Challenger emerges as a possible model for teaching incarcerated kids, budget worries may endanger these reform efforts. Cuts to state funding have already forced a round of layoffs since the settlement, and such new and innovative programs ?as well as the training for them ? require more resources. There is a fear that, though support and focus is here now, that won't remain the case in the future.

Challenger is home to about 240 teenage boys spread through three camps. Up to 40 percent of the youths are special education students, while 40 percent are English-language learners. Roughly 65 percent are Latino and 25 percent are African-American. With its 24-hour medical access, the maximum-security facility is where many boys with mental disorders are assigned.

?They?ve committed numerous crimes, everything from drive-by shootings to petty theft, to drugs ? you name it, we have it all,? said Steve Gores, a special assistant with the probation department who's been at Challenger since Nov. 2010.

Over the last year, the camp has changed from a place where books were banned in dorms to one where there is a library and daily silent reading sessions after lunch. A slew of vocational programs have sprung up, including a building skills construction trade course, a ServeSafe food handling class and a landscaping program.

Students are also involved in after-school programs such as bicycle repair and dog grooming. The county has introduced a new reading comprehension program and an educational credit-recovery course.

?The kids are beginning to see that somebody really cares about their environment, and they?re taking better care of it themselves,? said L.A. County Office of Education Superintendent Arturo Delgado. ?They?re getting turned on to some of the programs we put before them, and when you talk to them, they talk a little different now. ?Yeah, I really like this program, it was boring before.? So it?s not boring anymore.?

Practical skills

In a cavernous room, six students dressed in dark brown jumpsuits work intently over broad workbenches under the watchful eye of two probation officers, as well as their teacher, Judy Warner.

The shop rivals any high-tech woodshop outside the camp?s walls ? except that the equipment is attached to the tables.

?This is the best,? Warner said. ?That?s how it compares. It has all trades, where a lot of the woodshops are woodshop specific. And you can see, the gentleman over there sweating copper pipe for plumbing, the gentleman over there hooking up electric light bulbs ? we?re teaching this gentleman here cabinetmaking.?

Watkins quietly pointed out that the two students sharing the blowtorch on the copper tubing are rival gang members. One of those is Dwayne. (Because of court restrictions, only students who were 18 were able to talk to this reporter, and their last names were not disclosed.)

Dwayne, 18, previously a student at Washington Preparatory High School, has been at Challenger for three months, with seven to go. It?s his second time in the camp; his last time was in 2009-2010, he said.

?When I first came, none of these programs was here,? Dwayne said. ?It was just stressful, boring. ? All the programs, they make your time go by faster now ? instead of in the dorms sitting around. Keeps you out of trouble. I like it.?

So far he?s studied electrical work, plumbing and wall framing. Each section takes about 10 days, ?but I just read through the book and watched the DVD, and I?m a quick learner, so after I did it, I just learned how to do it, so like two days,? Dwayne said. ?When I get out I want to see if I can get a job or go to school for this.?

The building skills program started in March and is part of the career technical education that the camp is required to provide for all students as part of the settlement.

Only some boys are allowed in this program because of the potentially dangerous equipment, but school officials said they are working on creating other programs in high-demand careers such as medicine and technology that would require fewer safety precautions.

At a nearby table, Keimond, 18, expertly measured out pieces of wood, marking them with a pencil. He was working on making a cabinet and had already finished some bookshelves.

?I plan to take it all home,? Keimond said. ?The plumbing for sure, there?s a lot of stuff I can use around the home. ? I know I can do some plumbing around the house, drywall, anything that can be broke, I can fix it, instead of having my mama call, pay for it.?

Keimond was a student at Compton High School before he got to Challenger. He?s been in a month and a half, and had three months left.

?I want to go to college,? Keimond said. ?It really wasn?t a thought until I got here. But I wouldn?t mind taking up construction at L.A. Trade Tech.?

The camp is full of new programs. In one classroom, students sit in a room with rows of new computers, staring at the screens for four-hour blocks at a time. It is the new AdvancePath Academy, the first such credit-recovery program in a lockup environment. In a week and a half after its April launch, students were completing an entire semester English course.

Such programs have their detractors, who question the quality of an online program built for speed. But teacher Shelley Torres said the new course has already resulted in a ?dramatic change? in students? behavior.

?They?re more actively engaged, and I think they feel they?re much more in control of their education or their process,? Torres said. Instead of relying on the teacher to deliver instruction, ?they have instruction at their hands.?

Torres has been a county teacher for 10 years and has taught at Christa McAuliffe for the last year. She said the changes have changed the entire atmosphere of the school.

?They had a basketball team here from the camps, and it?s off-season now, so they don?t have that now, but you know, I?ve had students asking me, ?Are you staying today? Can you stay ?til 4 p.m. and come watch us play? We?re competing against X camp,?? Torres said. ?So you?re hearing that, stuff like that. Whereas before, you wouldn?t hear a student say ? 'can you stay and come,' because nothing like that was really happening.?

The changes, including the introduction of a reading comprehension course, have come swiftly with a new program added nearly every month over the past year. The expert reports and court filings have told the tale of a sometimes-rocky road to reform; county officials and observers noted that these are the first tentative steps toward what officials hope will be long-term progress.

?It has the potential, [but] I wouldn?t say it?s a model program yet,? said Peter Leone, a professor of special education at the University of Maryland. Leone is a national expert at delivering education in detention settings and a monitor in this case. He has been involved in monitoring and reform at dozens of facilities for 25 years.

?If it was a wall, we?d say the paint?s still wet,? Leona said.

He said the key piece is sustainability.

?It?s never easy to make a big change, but it?s easier when you?ve got some attention, because then you?ve got the support and you have consensus about what needs to be done,? Leone said.

?It?s harder to maintain that over time if there isn?t sufficient both community support and organizational support. So on LACOE?s side, you have to have a culture that supports the notion that the students who are incarcerated in the probation camps are entitled to high-quality educational services ... because we know that the likelihood of being arrested and re-offending is correlated with their levels of achievement.?

The initial gains were lost last year when the county?s budget problems forced it to send pink slips to teachers at Challenger; the principal also left, and behavior problems rose once again. This year, the school?s 29 teachers barely avoided another round of layoffs after the county put out a robust incentive package to get people to retire early.

?We are very pleased about the changes that we are seeing, but we also remain concerned about sustainability and quality assurance over the long term,? said Laura Faer, lead counsel and education rights director for Public Counsel, which was a party in the lawsuit. ?The key to lasting reform in this case is ensuring that the changes are actually systemized. ? We don?t want to be back here 10, 15, 20 years from now.?

The reform efforts have been led by Superintendent Delgado, who started last summer, as well as Principal Watkins, who took the helm in January. Together, the two have revitalized the reform.

Delgado said that, during his job interview, a supervisor told him something he always remembers: she didn?t feel that the county?s Office of Education understood its mission.

?One of my goals is to make sure that everybody understands what the mission is,? Delgado said. ?The mission is to save these kids, to give them hope, and we do that through education, and we do whatever it takes.?

And though Watkins has agreed to remain principal for one more year, the school will need to find a replacement ? a task many worry will not start early enough.

We need ?to really grow long, deep roots,? Watkins said. ?We really need to institutionalize everything we?ve done. Everything is startup, everything is new, and that?s great, but it needs to have sustainability, it needs to be able to continue, regardless of who?s sitting in this chair.?

Oh No They Didn't! - Lisa Kudrow May Take Legal Dispute with Ex ...

An attorney for Lisa Kudrow said he and the actress are considering taking a legal dispute with her former manager to the California Supreme Court.

The legal dispute began in 2008, when Kudrow's former manager, Scott Howard, sued her for refusing to pay him more than $50,000 in fees from her earnings from the television show Friends and other projects.

Last week, an appeals court ruled as admissible "expert" testimony that it is customary practice to pay managers a cut from projects received after a working relationship ends. Kudrow's lawyer has sought to keep that testimony out of the trial, which has not yet gone to a jury.

"The bottom line at this point in time is we are taking a look at possibly petitioning the California Supreme Court to look at the matter and at the same Ms. Kudrow is looking forward to having the matter decided in front of a jury if the matter proceeds to a trial court for a determination," said her attorney, Gerald Sauer of the law firm Sauer & Wagner LLP.

In 1991, Howard said the two had made an oral agreement that would receive a 10-percent cut of Kudrow's income, according to the lawsuit.

Starting in 1992, Kudrow had made recurring guest appearances on NBC's Mad About You. From 1994 through 2004, she starred as Phoebe in the hit series Friends. Toward the end of the series, she was entitled to 1.25 percent of profit from the show. For the last 18 episodes in 2004, Kudrow made $1 million an episode.

Howard and his company, Howard Entertainment Inc., did not return a request for comment.

In 2000 and 2004, the two modified their oral agreement to lower Howard's commission on certain earnings from Friends, eventually down to five percent, according to decision from the California court of appeal.

The recent declaration in question was submitted by Hollywood manager Martin Bauer on behalf of Howard.

Bauer said that "from at least the early 1980s, it had been the custom and practice in the entertainment industry for a personal manager to be paid post-termination commissions on the services that their clients rendered, and on engagements that their clients entered into, when the personal manager was representing them," according to the court filing.

A Los Angeles County Superior Court barred Howard from admitting the Bauer's testimony, and he granted Kudrow summary judgment. The appeals court reversed Wednesday, saying Bauer should be allowed to testify on remand, as reported by Courthouse News Service.

Kudrow's attorney said the court of appeals "obviously has taken a different view" than the lower courts.

"The court of appeals opinion by no means indicates there is an industry practice custom that would apply to this case," Sauer said. "We will be given an opportunity at trial that an industry custom did not exist when Kudrow and Howard entered into the original relationship in 1991."

Sauer, who said Kudrow would decline to comment, said they have until Oct. 1 to decide if they will file a petition with the California Superior Court.

When asked for his reaction to the now four-year-old case, Sauer said, "The legal process is one with twists and turns. You never know how long it is going to take."

Video Game Strategies That Work For Everyone | The best junk on ...

August 28, 2012 admin Uncategorized

Video games provide fun for everyone. Modern games simulate everything from simple math lessons for kids to programs involving world domination. This article will teach you how to be the best you can at gaming.

Don?t be scared of trying new games out or you can watch movies with a wmv to mov converter. A lot of people who like to play sports games may not like RPG games, but you never know! Trying out different video games helps you maximize your experience in playing.

Trade video games with close friends. These games cost a lot and you probably want to spend money on other things sometimes. See if your friends have games you might enjoy.

You can bond with your children by playing a fun video game together. The majority of children like video gaming and can gain lots of skills. There are tons of games out there that have educational value, and they increase hand-eye coordination as well.

If you are looking for a convenient and easy way to get more exercise, think about purchasing a Nintendo Wii. This gaming system allows you to play physical games.

Any gaming PC has to be clean and updated. To help your computer run gaming programs at peak, limit how many applications and programs are running on your computer. Run maintenance applications such as Defrag and ScanDisk regularly. These can help keep your computer from becoming bogged down by loose or abandoned files and running as efficiently as it can.

Learn the Metacritic score of any video game you?re thinking about buying prior to purchasing it. Some games become cheap because they aren?t any good. This means you?ve wasted your money in such a purchase. Knowing the Metacritic score will help you to make smart purchases.

Try a demo before purchasing a game. This will let you know if it?s worth it to go ahead and buy the full version. You should always be cautious when downloading anything, however. To avoid any potential problems on your computer, download only from reputable sources.

It?s important to set up a console that connected to the Internet to maximum privacy. This will enable you to censor out inappropriate materials and images. You can also filter out how long they?re able to chat with other people while they play.

Be certain that you know the rating of any video game before letting kids play it. Some games contain violence or other adult themes so they carry an adult rating. Kids shouldn?t play such a game. Violent video games can give children nightmares and affect their behavior.

Play games on your personal computer or laptop instead of purchasing a brand new one. Lots of games, particularly older ones, can be played online at no charge. You can still have fun and enjoy video games but without paying a lot for them.

When it comes to video games, repetition oftentimes means success. You are not going to master a game the first time you play it. Take your time and explore each level. Before you know what?s going on, you?ll be able to play like a pro.

Investing in a new game requires some thought. Avoid spending your money on a game you will not enjoy by doing some research. Check online reviews first, and buy it if you like what you read.

In order to find some excellent tips on the video game you are playing, search the Internet. Getting stuck in your game can be so irritating that you may give up on the game completely. If you look online, you should be able to find tips for getting past the level that?s giving you trouble.

When playing video games online, be cautious. Some of these games will require you to pay a monthly fee. If your child asks to join an online gaming community, make sure you understand how much this may cost. Find out all fees and determine whether the investment is worth the return.

If you have old games to sell, post some ads online. Big auction sites like eBay should be last resorts. If you can sell your games locally, you may be better off, because you can avoid the hassles associated with online selling. You can post your ads on sites like Facebook and Craigslist.

Make a decision on how old your kids should be before playing ?M? (Mature 17+) video games. In addition to the ratings system, most consoles allow users to set up parental locks. It is best to monitor your child?s gaming.

If see you that your kid is getting into a video game too much, especially like showing anger or aggression while playing, then they need a time out. Give them a warning to get away from the video game, and then get them away from it while giving them something else to do. Go for a walk with him, or engage in a different activity to distract him from video gaming.

Learn the different game ratings. Since they are not only made for children, you cannot assume they are all family friendly. In the United States and Canada, game ratings range from Early Childhood (EC) to the rarely-used Adults Only (AO). Other countries have different systems. If your game purchase is for another person, especially a minor, be sure that the game?s content is suitable for that person.

Video games are not wasted time, but escapism, education and entertainment. Smart gaming presents limitless benefits. You will enjoy it more and be more skillful if you remember the advice above.

Media violence consumption increases the relative risk of aggression, analysis shows

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? As president of the International Society for Research on Aggression (IRSA) and with consent of the organization's elected council, Craig Anderson appointed an international Media Violence Commission last December to prepare a public statement on the known effects of media violence exposure, based on the current state of scientific knowledge.

The Iowa State University Distinguished Professor of psychology appointed 12 IRSA researchers to the commission, including Douglas Gentile, an ISU associate professor of psychology.

The Media Violence Commission's research-based report concludes that the research clearly shows that media violence consumption increases the relative risk of aggression, defined as intentional harm to another person that could be verbal, relational, or physical. The report is published in the September/October issue of the journal Aggressive Behavior.

"Basically, the commission looked at, 'What does the research literature say?'" Anderson said. "In addition, we asked them to make some recommendations, if they chose to do so, about public policy. It really was kind of an open-ended charge."

Members took a fair and balanced look at the research

A well-known researcher on the effects of media on children, Gentile says commission members took a fair and balanced look at all of the existing research to see if they could achieve consensus, and then summarized what they found.

In their report, the commission wrote that aside from being sources of imitation, violent images -- such as scenes in movies, games or pictures in comic books -- act as triggers for activating aggressive thoughts and feelings already stored in memory. If these aggressive thoughts and feelings are activated over and over again because of repeated exposure to media violence, they become chronically accessible, and thus more likely to influence behavior.

"One may also become more vigilant for hostility and aggression in the world, and therefore, begin to feel some ambiguous actions by others (such as being bumped in a crowded room) are deliberate acts of provocation," the commission wrote in the report.

The commission recommends that parents know what media their children and adolescents are using. Rating systems often provide too little detail about media content to be helpful, and in any case, are not substitutes for parents' watching, playing, or listening to the media their children use.

"Parents can also set limits on screen use (The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time for children under 2 and no more than one to two hours total screen time per day for children/youth 3-18), and should discuss media content with their children to promote critical thinking when viewing," the researchers wrote. "Schools may help parents by teaching students from an early age to be critical consumers of the media and that, just like food, the 'you are what you eat' principle applies to healthy media consumption."

The commission recommends improving media ratings

While most public policy has focused on restricting children's access to violent media, the commission found that approach to have significant political and legal challenges in many countries. For that reason, it recommends putting efforts into improving media ratings, classifications, and public education about the effects of media on children.

"Improving media ratings really has two pieces. One is that the media ratings themselves need to be done by an independent entity -- meaning, not by an industry-influenced or controlled system," said Anderson, himself a leading researcher of the effects of violent media on children. "They need to be ratings that have some scientific validity to them.

"But the other piece is education, and if parents aren't educated -- not just about what the ratings system does, but also about why it's important for them to take control of their child's media diet -- then it doesn't matter how good the ratings system is, because they're going to ignore it anyway," he added.

Anderson hopes the final report will have value to child advocacy groups.

"Having such a clear statement by an unbiased, international scientific group should be very helpful to a number of child advocacy groups -- such as parenting groups -- in their efforts to improve the lives of children," he said.

New Hampshire Home Care, New Hampshire - Recovering From A ...

Having a stroke and going through the recovery process is a traumatic time in a person's life. The recovery time can be long, hard and grueling. Family members who are around to help the stroke patient recover will find that it is a very challenging experience.

If you have a loved one who is recovering from a stroke, you need to do whatever it takes to get them back on track. The best way to do this is contact a home care agency. At New Hampshire Parkinson's Care, client recovery is handled with both dignity and care. When a patient is discharged from the hospital and goes home, stroke recovery can begin. Some changes can be made easily in the home to accommodate the incoming patient. If the patient is confined to a wheelchair, having doors that are automatic will help the patient get around easier and more conveniently. Arranging the furniture so that the patient can come and go in and out of rooms is also helpful.

Individuals who have been through a stroke get tired of being limited in the things they can do and where they can go. They often feel cooped up inside the house and they love to go outdoors even if it's just for some fresh air. If you are not able to assist your loved one in moving in and out of the home, then consult the help of a New Hampshire Home Care aid. If the person who is recovering from the stroke is confined to a wheelchair, ramps would help make it easier for them to go outside. Adding strong handrails on the stairs will help the stroke patient get up and down much easier. All these little things may seem simple but they are truly a lot of help for a recovering patient.

Rehab for stroke patients should begin very soon after the patient is released from the hospital. Consult your New Hampshire Elder Care aid on what type of help family members can offer. During this time, family members can go with the patient to rehab to offer their support and help them recover quickly. Recovering from a stroke is not going to take a day or a week or a month of effort. It is going to take full-time, continuous effort with the patient and his or her family and friends. A stroke patient should never feel like losing hope because while consistent rehab is going on and there are medications to take, recovery can happen. It just takes time, effort, and will.

RALEIGH--One could say Courtney Tellefsen runs a farmer's market on wheels. Back in 2007, this stay at home mom had a vision to nourish her community.

?I started in my neighborhood in Quahalo with about 25 families and it's grown from there,? she said as she described The Produce Box's humble beginnings.

From her neighborhood to a warehouse in Raleigh, The Produce Box delivers fresh fruits and vegetables to more than 7,000 families, working with 40 farmers in the Triangle, Triad and Wilmington.

?Farmers are thrilled, we're getting calls everyday from farmers who are saying this sounds like a great idea how can I be involved,? she said describing its continued growth.

Sherry Heuser got involved to teach her daughter the importance of fresh, locally owned produce

?She knows what a whole tomato looks like and tastes like and she's happy to take a bite out of one, she has quite varied tastes and I owe that to Produce Box,? Heuser said.

As part of the business' mission to support local communities, a portion of the proceeds has provided grants for local farmers and food insecure communities.

The Produce Box is now sharing its mission on a bigger scale, thanks to a nationwide contest sponsored by Facebook and American Express.

Tellefsen admits she entered the contest for fun but it took on a life of its own, ?I can not believe it but out of 12,000 businesses that applied nationally, we're one of the final 10.?

The Big Break for Small Business contest recognizes the way companies engage with their customers online.

Tellefsen credits social media for the box's success.

?Those members are teaching their children the importance about buying local and supporting our neighbors and supporting that local economy,? she says.

Lessons learned today that can continue to be passed on through generations.

New HHS Iniative Uses Technology to Lower Cancer Rates for ...

Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a new challenge aimed at developing mobile application technology to connect women of color to information and resources for preventing and treating certain cancers. The challenge, or competition, called ?Reducing Cancer Among Women of Color App Challenge?, encourages entrepreneurs, software developers, and others to develop this new technology, which will then be utilized to connect women of color to information and services to help them prevent and fight cancer.

According to the HHS Press Release,? ?More than 300,000 new cases of breast, cervical, uterine, and ovarian cancer are diagnosed each year.?? Additionally, ?while the incidence and prevalence of these cancers are widespread, disparities in prevention, early treatment, quality of care, and outcomes result in a higher prevalence and mortality rates among minority and underserved women.?

At the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH), we know this to be true of? Latinas and cervical cancer. While mortality from cervical cancer is not as high compared to breast and other cancers (approximately 4-5,000 women die annually of cervical cancer compared to approximately 40,500 women from breast cancer), we know that Latinas make up a disproportionate share of women who are diagnosed with and die of cervical cancer. The reasons for this are many and complex (lack of health care insurance, lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate services, lack of immigration status) and point to larger injustices in who has access to preventive and other health care services.

The mobile applications will provide information? ?directly to women at a high risk of breast, cervical, uterine and ovarian cancers or women who already have been diagnosed with these cancers.?? According to HHS, the winning app will:

  • Provide users with general, accessible information about preventive and screening services for breast and gynecologic cancers ? in different languages and in culturally appropriate contexts;
  • Communicate with patient health records or provider-sponsored patient portals in a secure way that protects patient privacy and that will provide specific reminders and trigger electronic health record-based clinical decision support about preventive services;
  • Support the secure storage, viewing, and the exchange of complex patient care plans in a way that protects patient privacy while strengthening communications between a patient?s care team that may be located across a large geographic area, such as a local clinician being able to work with a regional cancer center in a major metropolitan area; and
  • Support patient engagement and caregiver support by helping patients and their caregivers keep track of complex care plans with a particular emphasis on connections to community health workers, such as promotores de salud.

The announcement was celebrated by the Congressional Tri-Caucus as it builds upon several months of advocacy by the Tri-Caucus to urge the Obama Administration to implement aspects of the Health Equity and Accountability Act (HEAA), a bill NLIRH supports which builds upon the foundation of the Affordable Care Act to eliminate disparities in health care access and health outcomes for communities of color and other intersecting communities. The Congressional Tri-Caucus- which consists of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Congressional Black Caucus, and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus-? introduced HEAA in the House of Representatives last fall, and was introduced in the Senate by Senator Akaka (D-HI) in April 2012.

Today?s announcement is a step forward for Latinas, who suffer from cervical cancer at rates higher than all other ethnic and racial groups. The HHS announcement specifically mentions disparities in cervical cancer and the importance of providing information? on prevention in linguistically and culturally appropriate ways. The announcement signals an acknowledgement of? the role geographical challenges play in health disparities, the importance of securing privacy, and the importance of integrating community health workers and promotoras (who play a large role in connecting Latinas to health care information and services).? And according to a recent Nielsen report, mobile technology is an increasingly important way Latinos access the internet, receive information, and connect to others.

We look forward to the implementation of the winning project and to connecting more Latinas to the information and services that will allow them to prevent cervical cancer. At the same time, NLIRH will also work to fight efforts to limit Latinas? access to reproductive and sexual health services, in places like Texas and Florida. We will urge state lawmakers to fully implement the Affordable Care Act, which will increase access to screenings through its support of Community Health Centers, expansion of the Medicaid program, and by eliminating co-pays for screening services in private plans. ? And NLIRH will work to advance a standard of care that provides all Latinas, including LGBTQ Latinas, will all the possible options for preventing cervical cancer, including screenings, the HPV vaccine, and accurate sexual health information.

For more information about Latinas and cervical cancer, please visit the resources on our website which includes our 2012 Cervical Cancer Prevention Policy Priorities.

Armstrong family request: Wink at the moon

See images from the career of astronaut and American hero Neil Armstrong.

By Alan Boyle

There are just a couple of things that Neil Armstrong's family wants you to do to pay tribute to the first moonwalker's life and legacy: Honor his example, and wink at the moon.

Armstrong, 82, is survived by his wife Carol, two sons by his former wife Janet, a stepson and stepdaughter, 10 grandchildren, a brother and a sister. Here's the?full statement issued by the family after his death:

"We are heartbroken to share the news that Neil Armstrong has passed away following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures.

"Neil was our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

"Neil Armstrong was also a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job. He served his Nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut. He also found success back home in his native Ohio in business and academia, and became a community leader in Cincinnati.

"He remained an advocate of aviation and exploration throughout his life and never lost his boyhood wonder of these pursuits.

"As much as Neil cherished his privacy, he always appreciated the expressions of good will from people around the world and from all walks of life.

"While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves.

"For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

Scientists investigating AI-based traffic control, so we can only blame the jams on ourselves

Scientists investigating artificial intelligencebased traffic control, so we can only blame the jams on ourselves

Ever found yourself stuck at the lights convinced that whatever is controlling these things is just trying to test your patience, and that you could do a better job? Well, turns out you might -- at least partly -- be right. Researchers at the University of Southampton have just revealed that they are investigating the use of artificial intelligence-based traffic lights, with the hope that it could be used in next-generation road signals. The research uses video games and simulations to asses different traffic control systems, and apparently us humans do a pretty good job. The team at Southampton hope that they will be to emulate this human-like approach with new "machine learning" software. With cars already being tested out with WiFi, mobile connectivity and GPS on board for accident prevention, a system such as this could certainly have a lot of data to tap into. There's no indication as to when we might see a real world trial, but at least we're reminded, for once, that as a race we're not quite able to be replaced by robotic overlords entirely.
