Gen. John Allen, the NATO commander in Afghanistan, has ordered that all troops at NATO headquarters and all bases across Afghanistan now carry loaded weapons around the clock after a series of recent attacks by Afghan forces, CNN reported Friday.
CNN, citing an unnamed U.S. official "with direct knowledge of the orders," said the move was ordered in recent days and divulged Friday amid two so-called "green on blue" attacks that killed two U.S. servicemembers and wounded three people.
An Afghan police officer opened fire on U.S. troops in Farah province in southwestern Afghanistan, killing two servicemembers; and two International Security Assistance Force troops and an Afghan servicemember were wounded by another Afghan servicemember in Kandahar.
Green on blue attacks, also known as insider attacks, have killed 39 coalition forces so far this year. On Tuesday, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta blamed the Taliban for the increasing number of insider attacks, a departure from previous comments in which he and other military leaders had downplayed the group?s involvement.
The Taliban's reclusive leader released a statement Thursday saying his fighters have infiltrated the Afghan police and army and taking credit for killing a rising number of U.S.-led coalition forces.?
